Sharing Everything on Facebook

The latest “Get out the Vote” application for facebook is more than a reminder to hit your local polls. Participants “donate” an intangible, but invaluable asset – their personal update status. An example is below:

Joe Smith just donated their status to get out the vote for Barack Obama on Nov 4. Donate your status: http://causes.com/election/26378302?m=9d721ac2.19 minutes ago – Comment

Supporters give. They even donate their status reports to the cause- to Barack or John - And with that gift, they gather more support for the cause.
Participants donate their virtual voice, their on line presence, their social shout-out and it becomes their cause-oriented communal battle cry.
In donating their status update, it is as if for that moment, they hand over their very being to the greater cause. What more can one give?

“The application allows users to specify whether they want to get out the vote for a particular candidate or on a non-partisan basis. With a single click, users can solicit all of their friends to donate their status lines as well.”

Not only has the participating individual posted their opinion but has placed collective peer pressure on all of their facebook friends to do the same. If one does not donate their status, are they not committed to voting? What are they hiding? Why are they not publicly and aggressively sharing the candidate for whom they will vote? Do they want to keep their choice private? Does this suggest they have something to hide? Why else would one keep their political views to themselves? And why, are there curtains on those polls anyhow?

I saw this application and was invited to donate my status, but I am wary of giving up too much personal information online - especially on Facebook. It's fun and so easy to get carried away, but I don't want strangers to know everything about me. Also, I don't want others to feel pressure on my behalf. Interesting use of the technology though. Happy voting!
